The US is blaming ex-Iraqi defectors and opponents of Saddam Hussein for false WMD information.
A major in the Iraqi intelligence service, who was a source for a pre-war US intelligence claim that Iraq had mobile biological weapons labs, was introduced to the Defense Intelligence Agency by the Iraqi National Congress, US officials said on Tuesday.
...The Iraqi major - believed to be Wafiq al-Samarai - told the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2002 that Baghdad had mobile laboratories for conducting research on biological weapons, a claim that ended up in intelligence assessments of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities. Aljazeera article
"And we eagerly used the information to press our war, even after we knew the claims were false," they did not say.
This isn't really news. It's been noted for a long time that Chalabi and other exiles were feeding information to the warmongers. Just telling them what they wanted to hear.
In desperation to fault someone else, the WH keeps pointing the finger of blame. CIA, INC, and Congress bought it too, and so did our European allies. I want to know how that makes things any better, even if it is true. We can deal with that later. Right now we need to correct the situation as best we can. We're going to be dealing with the fallout of all this for many, many years to come - perhaps forever. And I don't mind holding the CIA, the INC, Congress and our European allies accountable (however that might manifest), but none of that lets the White House off the hook as the major culpable party to the whole nightmarish mess.
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
