It's the stupid economy

U.S. consumer sentiment fell sharply in February, as Americans turned cautious about the U.S. economy that has been hampered by sluggish jobs growth, according to a survey released on Friday.

"Consumer sentiment" fell. Why isn't it ever just: nobody could afford to buy anything in February? Fewer people are working, and those who are working are working for less, so there wasn't a hell of a lot of shopping going on in February?
