At any rate, I'm going to Venezuela in April on a tour to get a better picture of what is happening there, and so I am looking at as much information as I can prior to the trip. As you know, if you've been reading YWA, I've been following current events in that country ever since I saw a little obscure blurb in early October on the US News website linking Chavez with terrorism. That threw up a red flag, and I started searching for reasons why we needed to do that. I found them. Venezuela supplies us with lots of oil, and the president, Hugo Chavez, is a leftist. Georgie doesn't like that. Because you know that Georgie's buddies can't control and siphon all the profits from oil when the people of a country own it.
I'll share some things that I find with you (although I'll spare you the travelogue stuff - which shows an incredibly beautiful and diverse place: ultra modern cities, white sand Caribbean beaches, untamed jungles).
Today: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
On April 12th 2002 the world awoke to the news that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had been removed from office and had been replaced by a new interim government. What had in fact taken place was the first Latin American coup of the 21st century, and the world's first media coup...
Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington's biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."
