Don King and Hugo Chavez

US boxing promoter Don King, in Caracas to view locally available boxing talent, was enthusiastic about what Chavez Frias is doing for the 80% of Venezuela's population who had been driven into abject poverty through more than 40 years of political corruption and government malfeasance.

Not unexpectedly, the wealthy elites who dragged Venezuela down to virtual bankruptcy before Chavez was overwhelming elected to power in 1998, have ignored the sporting event which was also used to promote a government anti-drugs campaign.

That left Chavez Frias free to win brownie points with King who told him 'live' on Sunday's 'Alo Presidente' radio/TV program: "Your magic lies in your 'people ties' ... you are concerned with the poor, the underprivileged, the downtrodden and the denied ... I'm going to talk to President George W. Bush and make sure that he knows my relationship with you so we can straighten out a lot of things. Viva Chavez!"
