Except for when Dick Cheney goes to war, there's no plan to get out.
One Whitehall source, speaking on condition of anonymity, has told the Guardian that there are no current plans to involve the armed forces to stem the rioting."It's being handled as a civil matter, Home Office lead rather than the Ministry of Defence. There are no plans to deploy [the armed forces]."
The source said the police were promising to put thousands of extra officers on the streets, and that - so far - there had been no request from the Home Office for the MoD to draw up contingency plans for military involvement.
Yes, but do their police have military tanks and weapons like our big city police do?
I know this rioting surrounds a police shooting, but it is unlikely that it’s just about that – three days now.
And this is where I think the Tea Party, anti-immigrant, anti-welfare bunch in our country is terribly short-sighted. What would it take to spark riots here in Miami, Los Angeles, Oakland? We’ve seen them before in better economic times. The more people are economically depressed, yet still expected to support the system, the more likely they are to fight back - or in the alternative, riot mindlessly. I don’t know what anti-welfare people in an economy that doesn’t provide enough jobs expect society’s losers to do. Sail to foreign shores for relief like the Irish did in the potato famine? Where would Americans go? No. They’re not going to emigrate, nor are they going to wither up and die. They’re going to riot in the streets. I guess the Tea Party are counting on our military-geared police to "control" them.
A very clear message.
Rioting spread to other cities in Britain for the first time, with unrest in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Nottingham.[...]
David Cameron has announced that 16,000 police officers will be deployed in London tonight, in an effort to get a grip on the violence. This is up from 6,000 the night before. The prime minister promised a tough response to any trouble tonight: "I have this very clear message to those people who are responsible for this wrongdoing and criminality: you will feel the full force of the law. If you are old enough to commit these crimes you are old enough to face the punishments."
David Cameron is just glad to have something take the Murdoch scandal he's involved in off the front pages.
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
