Update: Egypt / Israel Confrontation

After conflicting reports, [Egyptian] Information Minister Osama Heykal was quoted by MENA as saying five policemen were killed "inside Egyptian territory as a result of an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and armed elements inside Israeli territory."

Israeli officials accused Palestinian fighters in Gaza, which also borders Egypt, of planning [an attack which killed eight Israeilis’ and carrying it out after slipping into the Negev desert from Egyptian territory.

And I can boil down what has happened and where we stand now. At least after gleaning information from various confused and confusing reports which tend to give only partial and sometimes misleading information, this is what I’ve come up with:

Israel blamed Egypt for Israeli soldiers killing the five Egyptian policemen in Eypgt because Egypt didn’t control the lawlessness in its own territory. A perfectly Israeli thing to do.

Egypt demanded an apology and an investigation.

Israel apologized. Okay, you know that’s not true. Israel said it “regrets” the deaths of the policemen, and the army has been directed to investigate jointly with the Egyptian army.

Egypt said the Israeli response was “not in keeping with the magnitude” of the situation.

....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
