I always think that it's easy to sit on the sidelines and judge and cheer or jeer. But how difficult it must be for the world's whistle blowers to lay their careers, lives, and yes, even the lives of their loved ones, on the line to bring truth to light. May I never know. Seriously. But if I ever am in the position of being able to do the same thing, may I have one fraction of their courage.
We are always told that the military give their lives to protect our freedom. Not to diminish their sacrifices, because I know many of them honestly, truly believe that is what they are doing - and so, if that is what they believe they are doing, then in great measure that is what they're doing - but, I do wish they could see the bigger picture of what they are actually accomplishing. So, in an unpopular move I'm sure, I would at least like people to investigate the other side of the coin.
And while we are concentrating on the super patriot vision, we do not give enough press or attention to those whistle blowers, nor to those writers and investigators who risk their lives, who are truly altruistic - for the good of humanity - for our freedom.
I'll try to feature one of those who will not be silenced from time to time. Perhaps I should make a space in the sidebar for a permanent feature link. For now, check out Sara Paretsky. I think of Patrick Henry's cry to the Burgesses, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?" and William Lloyd Garrison's cry to slavery forces, "I am in earnest. I will not equivocate; I will not excuse; I will not retreat a single inch; and I will be heard."
Please support these people who truly do risk their lives and their freedom for yours.
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
