War crimes

Lance Cpl. William S. Roy is one of eight Marine reservists recently transported to Camp Pendleton to face charges related to the death, which occurred at the Camp Whitehorse detention facility in Nasiriyah.

...Roy's lawyer, Donald Rehkopf Jr. of Rochester, N.Y., said in a telephone interview yesterday that he was confident his client would be cleared of the charges. He said Roy's unit was not properly trained to guard POWs, a job normally handled by the Army.

...Official Marine documents provide few details of Hatab's death. The case, however, is strikingly similar to newspaper reports published in June regarding a 52-year-old Iraqi who was captured May 3 in Tallil.

The reports said the man was moved to a POW camp in Nasiriyah on June 3 and that he had been beaten on June 4 - the same day military documents say Hatab was beaten. On June 5, the prisoner reportedly complained of "health problems," including diarrhea, and died the next day, the same day as Hatab.

Have a look at this Panorama documentary aired on the BBC October 5 for more on the Hatab case and what happens to "detainees", along with the requisite denials.
