Venezuela

As I finish up my last minute preparations for my trip to Venezuela, I'm checking the latest news reports.

Opposition systematically kills Chavistas and simultaneously denounces Chavez for alleged human rights abuses.

Executive Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel has announced that the Venezuelan government will lodge an official complaint abroad against the opposition for the murder of 62 rural leaders in Zulia, Tachira and Apure States.

"Hired killers, in common agreement with opposition and land-owner factions, have been applying genocide in border areas murdering 62 peasant leaders, all government supporters."

The latest opposition assassination was the case of Pedro Doria, father of another rural leader killed six months earlier.

The opposition has not mentioned any of the killings in its denunciation of human rights violations in Venezuela. Only independent human rights groups such as PROVEA and Red de Apoyo de Justicia y Paz have registered border badland killings.

Chavez has proclaimed FTAA dead, RIP.

And, people are the same everywhere

Venezuela's famous Chacao palmeros (palm gatherers) have come down from the Avila hillside where they have been staying in tents for a little more than a week cutting enough palms for Roman Catholic worshippers to initiate Holy Week (Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ) ceremonies today on Palm Sunday.

The custom has been in force for the last 236 years and has since become an opportunity for the Mayor of Chacao, whoever she or he may be, to shine and to gain free political mileage.

...In earlier years local government through the National Parks Institute (Inparques) had attempted to prevent the tradition because of fears of depleted palm trees and indiscriminate cutting but the resulting uproar forced a postponement of the plans and the palmeros agreed to clean up their act. A committee of Inparques officials, firefighters and municipal officials have accompanied the palm collectors to monitor the cutting process.

Screw the earth - we want our religious tradition.

....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
