April 25, 2004.
Ann Richards will be there.
Some reasons why....
I am marching because, as an obstetrician/gynecologist, I can not bear the thought of not having a legal option for women whose fetuses are chromosomally abnormal, have congenital abnormalities, are the result of rape or incest, or whose birth would be a social, emotional or financial disaster. I march because I have seen the results when abortion is not a legal option. I march for the health and safety of all women.
My sister and I will be marching because although if either of us were to become pregnant, we would not abort, we always want the option of choice. We would not ever want to impose our personal belifes on another woman. We will march because we are free.
I am marching because there was a point where I was on the other side of this fight. There was a time that I was very Pro-Life and completely against abortion. It was easy to take that stance, until I had to make the decision for myself....
I am marching in memory of my friend, "Barbara", 16 years old and millions like her. She died because dirty instruments in a filthy back room, a med school dropout, archaic laws , fear & shame. Before Roe vs. Wade many women perished in just this manner.
I am marching because I had an illegal abortion. It was a terrible experience, and NO ONE should ever have to choose between that and an enforced pregnancy. I am marching for my daughters and my son. And my 17 year old daughter marches with me.
I cannot march because I cannot afford to go to Washington. However, I thank all who will march, all who will represent the millions of women and men who cannot, all who will speak knowing that you speak for many more who cannot be there. There is much movement in our government to curtail our civil rights -- many rights for many sectors of society -- and while we still have the ability to say STOP, we must do so. Self-governance takes vigilance and activism and requires that we speak out. Thank you for speaking for me and my family.
