Juan Cole reports:
The British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has now said that UK troops are likely to be in Iraq until at least 2007. Interim Governing Council member Mahmoud Osman, in a telephone interview with Cairo radio, complained that this announcement contravened the November 15 accord between the Coalition Provisional Authority and the IGC, which stipulated that US, British and other troops would remain at the pleasure of the new Iraqi government.
For crying out loud. Why do people keep taking the UK/USA at its word? Haven't they seen enough?
How many agreements do we have to be in contravention of before people catch on?
You think the Kurds got it in writing that they could get some autonomy in the north by turning over Saddam? You think they might take the coalition to the new Iraqi court if they don't?
Geez.
And if you don't like it Mahmoud, you can easily be replaced. (Mahmoud Osman - aka Othman - incidentally, is a chosen member of the IGC who was a Kurdish exile living in London where he founded the Kurdish Socialist Party. I assume he had agreed to drop his dangerous socialist views. And now he is tasting the rewards.)
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
