Rumsfiend testifies

And Billmon's readers comment even as it's happening.

Eg:

Spontaneous demonstration - group of about a dozen people, some dressed informally, others in business attire, holding big sign, "Fire Rumsfeld" and yelling, most consistently "Fire Rumsfeld", but also some very specific challenges and accusations. Officers came to escort them out, and they walked out in a calm, orderly way. No force was used. Rumsefeld took a drink of water.

They are sticking to the "this is a few bad apples" story line.

"Decemeber 2002 to present: 35 deaths being investigated by Army CID." Was Lynndie England working every room?!

the theme seems to be--and they go back to it again and again--

these atrocities were caused by a few bad apples. the rest of our troops are great.

we will punish those responsible.

our military is really really great, except for these few bad apples.

Iraqi's shall see how democracies deal with such problems.

we (the military) are honorable.

Jiingoistic, flag waving, mom-and-apple-pie.

Playing to the base. We will get nothing of substance out of this hearing.

Note to Sy Hersh: Release the hounds.

Levin:

"Are you limiting this to perpetrators or to those who prompted, ordered, or hinted at this conduct?"

Rumsfeld:

"Certainly anyone who recommended that behavior needs to be brought to justice."

I think I can imagine what his idea of justice in this case is, and I don't think it gets close to mine.

Remarks on Joe Lieberman's questioning:

Lieberman's logic does not resemble our earth logic.

Joe Lieberman channeling Rove

"We don't someone's rights to be infringed on." This from Don Rumsfeld.
18,000 criminal investigations in DoD last year?!
6 courts martial?!
Lieberman is saying that those damned terrorists have ever apologized. . .Americans are better because we apologize (when a gun is held to our head and poll numbers are slipping--ed.).

Posted by: dd at May 7, 2004 01:12 PM

Senator Lieberman, you are supposed to be ASKING A QUESTION....
Posted by: larkspur at May 7, 2004 01:13 PM

Lieberman: You (earlier) said the Geneva Convention was not relevant here. Do you think you were right? Did anything replace the Geneva Convention or 190-8?

Rummykins: Preznit said in 2002 that Geneva Convention provisions did not apply with respect to Al Qaeda but DID apply to Taliban. ... These people WERE treated consistent with the Geneva Convention.

L: Are the 1000's in Iraq considered al Qaeda?

R: Preznit said Geneva conventions apply to all Iraqis.

L: So the fault is the guards weren't appropriately trained.

Did something beneficial replace the Geneva convention?"
Yes- some really excellent prison porn.
and
A Quaeda = everyone who lives in Iraq.
okey dokey

The 9/11 terrorists never apologized? Did Lieberman really raise that issue?! The terrorists killed themselves!
Now Rumsfeld--and Bush and Cheney and all the other neo-cons who sucked us into this war--can do the honorable thing and commit suicide, too. In fact I'd like to see him commit hara-kiri right there, before the Committee.

Sen. L. Graham
Q. "The worst is yet to come, yes?"

Rumsfeld: "Yes, there are lot more pictures."
