Presidential Auction 2004

Digby has a very interesting comment that I think bears consideration:

I think that Al Gore holds a unique position in American politics. He is the man who was elected president who was not allowed to take the office. It's a position that allows him to speak in ways that others, who are within the political system, cannot. It's not because they are cowardly but because they have to actually govern and our system requires that presidential candidates especially, have to run to represent all the people, not just our side.

Something the king has never let get in the way of his proclamations.

It seems to me that we have become completely blind to that very important point, and in this country turned the executive realm into a sport and nothing more: our team vs. their team.

Firebreathing is a powerful thing. But, it is not in and of itself a good thing. We have to use our hearts and our heads and manange this election intelligently.

Well, then, we're screwed, huh?
