28 protestors are going to jail.
The 28 defendants were among 10,000 November 2003 demonstrators who, in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, called for the immediate closure of the SOA/WHISC terrorist training facility at Fort Benning and to remember the victims of SOA violence in Latin America. For their troubles they were charged with trespass and now face up to six months in federal prison and $5,000 in fines.
Reports from the United States say that trial judge G. Mallon Faircloth is known for giving the maximum of 6-months to opponentsof the SOA/WHISC terror training and that nearly 170 people have already served over 75 years in prison for engaging in non-violent resistance. SOA Watch founder, Father Roy Bourgeois says "those who speak out for justice are facing prison time while SOA-trained torturers and assassins are operating with impunity." article
