Walking a fine line

Thinking more about the case of Maher Arar.

Is aiding and abetting a crime? Is knowingly allowing a crime to happen tantamount to participating?

9/11 concerns aside (for the moment), that's what's happening in our treatment of "non-combatant enemies". Isn't that why we have the base on Guantanamo? To be outside U.S. eyes and maybe laws? It strikes me as rather odd that we should be renting land from Cuba while at the same time sanctioning them because they're bad guys.

And what about our tendency to deport people we'd like to get information out of to countries that have no problem using torture to extract information?

One unnamed official was quoted as saying, "We don't kick the [expletive] out of them. We send them to other countries so they can kick the [expletive] out of them."

....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
