TalkLeft asks:
Does President Bush really think that re-naming an unconstitutional and unfair procedure will make it palatable to the American people? Apparently. He and Prime Minister Blair gave a press conference today which included questions and answers about the Guantanamo detainees. No longer are they "enemy combatants." Now they are "illegal non-combatants."
The blog then quotes His Slowliness from the press conference transcript:
" These are illegal, noncombatants, picked up off of a battlefield."
My first reaction to that is that it's just George forgetting what they're really called, as he bumbles his way through another "unscripted" response.
The first responder to the post has that same impression, but the second one says George has used the exact term before, and thinks therefore that it is intentional.
I'm not sold that it's still not George's bungling the proper term, no matter how many times he repeats it. Who knows?
Another commenter points out that the term "illegal non-combatant" makes no sense, and suggests that he may be trying for "unlawful combatant", a term used for German saboteurs captured on U.S. soil.
I repeat. Who knows?
But an amusing post at the end of the thread makes a very good point:
Don't be too judgemental. After all, Bush is an Illegal Non-President, isn't he?
