Australia's priorities in the War on Terror

Australia has refused a long-standing request from Afghanistan to help train its fledgling army, instead opting to train Iraqi forces, a move that highlights the Federal Government's priorities in fighting terrorism.

Afghanistan made the request directly to the Prime Minister, John Howard, 12 months ago amid concerns it was ill-equipped to manage the resurgence of Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants in the south of the country and close to the border with Pakistan.

A spokeswoman for the Defence Minister, Robert Hill, said Afghanistan's requests were turned down because Australian forces were too busy on other operations.
