Juan Cole has a post about giving with one hand and taking away with the other. Iraqi college students may now travel abroad "if they can afford it", but they may not put up posters on campuses without the approval of a "student union".
He rightly concludes that "this decision undermines the hopes for democracy in Iraq. It is the young people who have to learn how to practice it. Telling them that a new politburo knows best and will set limits on their political speech is not helpful to the democratization process.
Of course you may call me a jaded Bush-hater, but I am not entirely convinced that we are really interested in turning Iraq into an independent democracy. Just a feeling.
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
