Pledgemania

Bill Maher went after presidential candidates who sign pledges, like the Grover Norquist anti-tax one that 95% of Republicans have signed, and the defense of marriage pledge that recently got Michele Bachmann in some hot water recently.[*]

[...]

[T]he pledge makes some pretty extreme demands about a whole lot more than marriage.

[...]

[Maher called his pledge] the "American Eagle Liberty Bill Ronald Reagan You're A Homo If You Don't Sign It Pledge."

Mahr’s 7-plank pledge:

After this you promise to not sign any more stupid pledges.

You must pledge not to drive a truck or go hunting or eat in rural diners or do any other homespun kiss-ass bullshit you don't normally do. In fact, your stump speech must be titled: Who needs Iowa? It’s all fat fucks and corn.

You have to swear to once in a while swear. I don’t trust anyone who never swears. Just once I want to see Ron Paul at a diner in New Hampshire screaming, “God damn! That is a fucking pancake!”

No flag pins. You’re running for president of the United States. I think we can safely assume you’re on the team.

No flannel shirts. You’re the former ambassador to China, not the Brawny paper towel man.

You must agree to stop saying, “The American people are smarter than that,” and admit that, in fact, they are morons.

Most important, if you become president, you must pledge that you will tell voters the simple truth: that America's best days are behind us, but that you will help manage our inevitable decline and do your best to see that we fall as gracefully as possible and really stick the landing.

Here’s the video including Mahr’s other “New Rules.”

2012 White House hopeful Michele Bachmann — who is now virtually tied with frontrunner Mitt Romney in Iowa — came under fire for signing a new marriage-themed pledge that addresses same-sex marriage, and also suggested that black children born into slavery had happier families than black children born today.

The pledge is the work of the FAMiLY LEADER, a Christian organization run by former Iowa gubernatorial candidate and Christian Right kingmaker Bob Vander Plaats.

In the face of intense criticism, the organization removed the references to slavery from the pledge this weekend, but not before Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum signed the pledge last week.
