  3. m,
Someone mentioned the walls put up between Shia and Sunni neighborhoods during the surge have been taken down, hence the uptick in bombings.
Do you know if there's any truth to that, that some of the walls have been taken down? They may be more along the lines of barriers than actual walls I think.

LOL liberal media lying about the surge.

  4. i believe they were actual heavy duty walls. at least somewhere back when i recall thinking what an ideal thing to do: wall everybody off from each other - the whole world should try it. seriously, i was aghast. now we're into building walls - (even in our own country!) - some years ago we were seriously ridiculing the russians and the eastern block countries for building walls.

i'll do some poking around to see if they've come down.

  5. for the best analysis, imo, of what's happening and why, i would look to juan cole: http://www.juancole.com/

i haven't been following him as close lately, and i don't see a search function on his blog.

june 2009: this article says the walls around a military outpost were being taken down: http://www.mnf-iraq.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26779&Itemid=225

the last i found mention of the other city walls was reports that they intended to take them down:

august 2009: "All blast walls designed to protect the streets of Baghdad will soon be taken off major thoroughfares, the Iraqi military said Wednesday, the latest in a government push to restore a sense of normalcy despite persistent bombings in the capital.

The removal of the ubiquitous concrete walls — which have for years been a bleak feature of daily life in Baghdad — would ease the flow of traffic and improve the appearance of the streets."

these articles were written when the walls went up:
