Reaction to Venezuela's CNE announcement regarding referendum signatures

Spontaneous riots have broken out across Venezuela this evening as embittered opposition radicals refuse to accept that they have been defeated by due democratic process.

(CNE) has announced a preliminary total of just 1.83 million signatures the opposition is hanging onto a shred of hope that another 876,000 signatures may indeed be valid, but only if the citizens who originally signed step up to the plate to confirm that they indeed signed.

They will have that opportunity at more than 1,000 "repair centers" between March 18 and 22 but already political realists have woken up to the fact that purely on the basis of falsifications and forgeries already discovered, they will be hard put to pass the 2.4 million threshold required under the 1999 Constitution to launch a revocatory referendum against the President.

...Private banks have shut 20 branch offices, fearing sabotage as protesters stopped garbage collection and caused traffic jams, stopping emergency vehicles and ambulances as thousands of workers were unable to get to their jobs for a second day.

And that's just Caracas, the capital city.

There could be a full-fledged uprising between now and March 18, that might prompt a backlash by the government. Things could get very ugly indeed.

I suppose things could settle down, too. Unlike everywhere else in the world right now.

....but hey, do what you want....you never listen to me anyway.
