Opposition leftist candidates, mostly from the Socialist, Communist and Green parties, received some 40 percent of the vote while right-wing National Front candidates got close to 15 percent.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin's UMP (Union for a Popular Movement), along with its allies from the UDF (Union for a French Democracy) received only 34 percent of the vote.
Politicians and analysts agreed that this was a clear signal from French voters that they are unhappy with the government's economic reforms, including pension cuts passed last year and proposed cuts in the nation's generous health care program planned for this summer.
"We have received the message," said Raffarin on French television Sunday night. He said he would make the necessary decisions to satisfy the hopes and wishes of the French people.
