Our man in Iraq

Iraqi Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi says he is tired of being blamed for misleading the United States about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and points the finger instead at the CIA.

Chalabi, who heads the Iraqi National Congress exile group and has close ties to the Bush administration, says the CIA should have done a better job analysing information received from defectors he steered their way.

"This is a ridiculous situation," he told the CBS 60 Minutes programme. Chalabi still maintains that weapons of mass destruction will be found in Iraq.

He said the CIA knew defectors could be biased and that even the press was saying "defectors have an axe to grind, don't believe them."

"Now you're telling me that despite all this public evidence, the United States government took our word without checking out the people?" Chalabi said incredulously.

"Intelligence people who are supposed to do a better job for their country and their government did not do such a good job."

Uh. Excuse me. Wasn't Chalabi himself one of "our people" that needed to be checked out? And wasn't it Chalabi who said it didn't matter whether the information was bogus, the important thing is that he/they got what they wanted, i.e. Saddam ousted?

But he is right about one thing - we chose to use his information even when we knew his reputation, and even when we had information that it was not reliable. But it wasn't the CIA who chose to use it. So, I'd be pointing that finger somewhere else.

I have a feeling Chalabi is steadily wrapping his own noose. And I expect he is doing it at the behest of the group that should rightly be at the end of that finger pointing.

I'm going to bet on the CIA when the dust settles. There is one thing that throws a wrench into the situation as I'm looking at it, though, and that is George the Evil Father's connections in the CIA. That may be what is protecting George the Idiot Son at this point. I wonder how the equation would change should Poppy bite the big one.

There's not a sure outcome here. But I'm pretty sure the outcome will eventually be according to a CIA plan. Those people don't have the need to crow, either. So you may never know the angles and what actually is taking place. In fact, I'd also bet on that. You won't.

....but hey, you bet on what you want....you will anyway.
