My friend Tom (previous post) also just informed me that South Dakota Representative Bill Janklow was convicted on that manslaughter charge. Will wonders never cease! Fortunately, nobody took me up on my bet that he'd get off.
The former four-term governor, who appeared stunned by the verdict and left the courtroom without speaking, faces a possible 10-year prison term and a $10,000 fine on the manslaughter charge. article
Let's see what sentence he gets. To be set on January 20.
He's a felon now. Does that mean he can't vote in Florida? It's not yet certain what that means about his seat in the House.
[T]he ethics committee of the House of Representatives could investigate the case and recommend that Janklow be reprimanded, censured or expelled.
According to House rules, members convicted of a crime carrying a prison sentence of two years or longer should refrain from voting until they are cleared or re-elected.
I'm still willing to bet he won't do jail time. But that's what he said would be the only thing that would stop him from speeding. Remember?
"Bill Janklow must now decide his future, and whatever choice he makes, I know that the interests of the people of South Dakota will be first and foremost in his mind," U.S. Rep. Tom Reynolds of New York, chairman of the House Republican campaign committee, said in a statement.
You know it, Tom. Just like they have been for all these years that he's been screaming around the state in that big cadillac running stop signs at high speed.
....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
