Declassified Kissinger documents

"Look, our basic attitude is that we would like you to succeed," Kissinger reassured Guzzetti in the seven-page transcript, marked SECRET. "I have an old-fashioned view that friends ought to be supported. What is not understood in the United States is that you have a civil war. We read about human rights problems but not the context. The quicker you succeed, the better."  article

What Kissinger is saying in this recently declassified document is that human rights abuses are okay in certain contexts. In this case, the "you" he is referring to is the Argentine military junta who was responsible for the "deaths or 'disappearance' of some 30,000 people from 1975 to 1983."

This approval for human rights abuses was denied by Kissinger all along, of course.

What's interesting to me is that they keep these records, which they can expect to be declassified well after the fact. I guess nobody gives a fark. And no matter how many of these things come to light, you'll still find a huge population of voters who are willing to believe that their leaders never lie, and that our country is always on the side of "good".

Kind of depressing.

....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
