Presidential Auction 2004

Now this is how it should happen...

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards climbed aboard the back of a pickup truck for an impromptu rally Thursday after hundreds of supporters showed up in the parking lot of the motel where he stayed overnight.

Encouraged by the turnout, Edwards staffers passed out signs that read "America Can Do Better" and "Help is on the Way." They even bought two large boxes of doughnuts and passed them out among people at the Victorian Inn in this southeast Missouri town.

...The turnout was a bit of a surprise in heavily Republican Cape Girardeau, the hometown of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Many in the crowd said they were simply ready for a change.

...The outstate vote, which played a large role in helping Bush four years ago, again could be a deciding factor in November. Democrats said rural and small-town voters may be leaning back their way because of Kerry and Edwards.

"They are not just out for the metropolitan areas. They have concerns for the rural areas as well," said Jiles Markham, 42, of Advance. "The level of leadership we've gotten from Washington has really hurt rural America."
