Police State

This is one of those things that unnerves me about all of our new police forces and homeland security services and domestic intelligence agencies. More cops flexing their muscle and less safety overall. Police states aren't planned, they evolve. We are in the midst of one of those evolutions.

What Digby's talking about.

And yes, it disturbs me, too. Any two-bit passport checker, anybody with any job remotely tied to security, is able to exercise that old seductive devil, POWER. And given a chance, most people in that position seem not to have enough integrity to resist. Unfortunately, too many of them become borderline Sadists in the bargain. I'm thinking of the woman who was forced to drink her own breast milk at the airport. You are infinitely less likely to be a victim of a terrorist than you are of your fellow dull-witted, goose-stepping American with a taste for control.
