Portland archdiocese files for bankruptcy

Tuesday’s bankruptcy filing brought an immediate halt to a pair of priest abuse cases scheduled to begin this week in Portland. Both cases involved the Rev. Maurice Grammond, who has been accused of molesting more than 50 boys.

Grammond died in 2002. In a deposition taken before his death, Grammond said, “I’d say these children abused me. They’d dive in my lap to get sexual excitement.”

Plaintiffs in the two suits involving Grammond sought a total of more than $160 million.

Vlazny said the archdiocese made “every effort to settle the cases fairly. I am committed to just compensation. With 60 other claims pending, I cannot in justice and prudence pay the demands of these two plaintiffs.”

Well, the plaintiffs are outraged. And they should be. The church has actually sent convicted priests to new parishes rather than defrock the SOBs. There is a steaming pile of shit here. The abuse of power. Not exactly a rare story, is it?

P.S. Bob says the Church may be bankrupt - it certainly is morally - but the Vatican has some funds. No kidding. This is surely the richest organization on the face of the planet.
