Bad Taste, Bad Timing Award
Taco Bell is running a TV commercial of a rescue operation at a snowy mountain avalanche. The rescuers cut a hole in the crust and prepare to send down food, but the tortillas look too delicious and they eat them instead, while the victim calls out from below.

Taco Bell ads have been pure crap since they fired the chihuahua. But the tastelessness is completely commonplace. Beer ads especially highlight stupidity and greed--there's one on now where two guys grab the last beer from the ice bin at the same time. They agree to do "rock-paper-scissors" for it. On the count of three, one of the guys throws a rock at the head of the other guy, knocking him out. Violence, theft and dishonesty are constantly highlighted as ways to get your beer which are much preferable to going to the store and buying your own. Sexism and racism make frequent appearances in beer ads as well (that horrible Bud Light ad where the English instructor is teaching a bunch of ferners how to order a beer in various parts of the US comes to mind).
ReplyDeleteIt all makes me want to make a run for the border.
i agree. commercials in general are irritating and crass (but then, most of TV is as well - just at a lower volume).
ReplyDeleteon the other hand, i know you've seen mexican TV, and my opinion of it is that it's a bad copy of all the bad u.s. TV, only hyped up a notch louder and flashier.
still, the commercialismo isn't as widespread down there.
yet.
