Fred Thompson's Watergate Role

SF Gate has some detail on Fred Thompson's role in tipping off Nixon to the fact that the investigating committee on which Thompson sat in the Senate knew about Nixon's secret tapes - the evidence that led to Nixon's downfall. It appears that Nixon correctly believed Thompson would be "friendly" to his case, but considered him "dumb as hell."

Of course, what's the effect of a negative endorsement like that coming from Tricky Dick the First?
