Official and signed

Digby at Hullaballoo offers the official version of why we invaded Iraq:

When Bush gave the order to invade Iraq, he was required to send a letter to the congress telling them that he had done it and why. Here's the letter he sent on March 18, 2003:

Acting pursuant to the Constitution and [the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002] is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.

It appears that if the WMD didn't pan out (which it didn't, and they probably figured it might not), then there had to be another reason to invade Iraq. This paragraphs would seem to indicate that that other reason was to "take the necessary action" specifically against countries involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks. By that measure, Cheney's and Chowderhead's insistence that they never said Saddam was involved in 9/11 but only that he had links to terrorists (specifically Osama), won't justify the invasion according to their original justification to Congress. And, that paragraph is about as close as you can come to saying Saddam had responsibility in the 9/11 attacks without flat out saying it.

They still lied. And they're still lying.

Unless they're lumping Saddam into the international terrorists or terrorist organizations category. And if they try that one, they're seriously reaching.

....but hey, do what you want....you will anyway.
