Meanwhile in Afghanistan

Gunmen in the Afghan capital Kabul shot dead a Briton working as an adviser to the government of President Hamid Karzai, the British embassy said.

Afghanistan is preparing to hold parliamentary and local elections this year. Karzai, who was elected in the country's first direct presidential poll in October, has made improving security and fighting drug trafficking the priorities of his government.

Ah yes, the twin U.S. agenda - security needs because the U.S. has an unwanted military presence there and the ubiquitous drug trafficking bugiman, in which the CIA plays a prominent role. Relief of poverty, education, health and employment in a country don't fill U.S. corporate coffers.
