Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Thursday that he wants to step down but just can't.

"If I leave today there will be chaos," he told ABC's Christiane Amanpour.

As opposed to what’s going on there now, I suppose.

Violence in Egypt escalated overnight, and on Thursday reports surfaced that foreign journalists and human rights activists are being arrested in Cairo.

The BBC, New York Times, Associated Press, CNN and Washington Post all reported that foreign journalists' equipment was taken or that journalists were being arrested and detained. The Washington Post reported their Cairo bureau chief Leila Fadel had been arrested, along with at least one dozen other journalists. The Post also reported that they have contacted the U.S. State Department regarding the arrests.

Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times columnist, tweeted Thursday morning: "Govt is trying to round up journalists. I worry about what it is they're planning that they don't want us to see.

In addition to journalists being detained, human rights activists were reportedly also being targeted by the Egyptian government.

"Human Rights Watch researcher Daniel Williams was detained by Egyptian security forces in Cairo today. Williams was one of several international and Egyptian human rights activists picked up in a raid on the Hisham Mubarak Law Center, including a researcher for Amnesty International. Human Rights Watch is endeavoring to contact Williams in custody and secure his release.
