DECEMBER: Gawker posted a one-line link to President Obama calling WikiLeaks "deplorable." Minutes later, someone purporting to be from the 4chan-affiliated hacker group Anonymous started tweeting from the Twitter account of Gawker Media's tech site Gizmodo, claiming to have stolen 1.5 million email addresses and passwords from Gawker.com, Gizmodo.com and Lifehacker.com. Three follow-up tweets came minutes after, one reading simply "#wikileaks" and another "SUPPORT WIKILEAKS." The third said, "I remember when Gawker.com told Anon that they were invincible and couldn't be hacked. Well, you were wrong :)

DECEMBER: THE website of the Swedish prosecutor's office pursuing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has come under cyber attack in the latest salvo by his online supporters. PandaLabs, the malware detection laboratory for computer security firm Panda Security, said the prosecutor's website, aklagare.se, was brought down by members of the "cyber hacktivist" group called "Anonymous".

About 500 Anonymous participants took down websites for the Egyptian Ministry of Information and the ruling National Democratic Party in Egypt. For Yemen, the websites targeted included the Yemeni Ministry of Information, the tax office, and the website for Yemen's long-serving president, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

FEBRUARY: The online group of hacktivists known as "Anonymous" infiltrated the network and websites of an Internet security company after learning the company planned to sell information about the group to the FBI.

The website of Washington DC-based HBGary Federal was hijacked Sunday along with the Twitter account of CEO Aaron Barr. The company's website was defaced with a message that read, "This domain seized by Anonymous under section #14 of the rules of the Internet."
