The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, is about to begin a whirlwind visit of Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Dr Rice will have talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, before going on to the West Bank to meet the new Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas.
The two men will then go to Egypt for the first summit between an Israeli and Palestinian leader in more than four years.
But the defacto cease-fire established ahead of next week's summit has been marred by violence on an almost daily basis.
Dr Rica says she is to develop ways for the two sides to solve the sort of crises that will "inevitably" arise as they pursue peace.
She says it will be "a very hard road".
