Ensuring Our Torture Legacy

There's speculation about whether the DOJ's silence on whether the promise not to prosecute interrogators implies a promise not to prosecute the torture program's designers. It does not imply that. Period. They are silent because they want to avoid the outcry if they flatly and definitively indicate that no one will face charges for these illegal and immoral actions. But no one will. The only people to face any sort of responsibility have already been tried - the dumb, sadistic soldiers who were stupid enough to take pictures of what they were doing.

The reason there will be no investigation of the officials who came up with this nightmare is because leaders of both parties were complicit. Congressional intelligence committee members included Democrats, too.

December 9, 2007

The lawmakers who held oversight roles during the period included [House leader Nancy] Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Sens. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), as well as Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan).
