JERUSALEM, May 22 - Laura Bush got a small taste of the passions of the Middle East today, as her carefully designed trip to places holy to both Muslims and Jews attracted small numbers of emotional protesters.

The first lady, who was encouraged to visit Israel by her husband, was greeted by about 20 protesters as she walked along the huge plaza before entering the Dome of the Rock, one of the Muslim world's holiest shrines.

One protester shouted in English: "You are not welcome here. Why are you hassling our Muslims?"

She was never in danger, but the large presence of armed Israeli police, some in riot gear, angered the demonstrators.

At the Western Wall, another small crowd of protesters shouted, "Free Pollard now," calling for the release of Jonathan Pollard, an American Jew who was convicted of spying for Israel, and who was recently visited in prison by the Israeli ambassador to Washington, Danny Ayalon. But again, both Israeli and American security officials kept the demonstrators back.

Mrs. Bush also faced a few demonstrators at her first stop here, after arriving from Jordan, when she had tea with Gila Katsav, the wife of the Israeli president, Moshe Katsav. Some called for the release of Mr. Pollard, while others shouted against Israel's plan to pull out of Gaza.

Mrs. Bush also spent nearly an hour touring the new Holocaust history museum at Yad Vashem, where she laid a wreath to the dead and wrote in the visitor's book, "Each life is precious," and "We commit ourselves to reject hatred and to teach tolerance and live in peace."

Dripping as she is in the blood of thousands of innocent, precious Iraqi lives; married to the man most responsible for encouraging the hatred that permits American soldiers to brutalize entire populations and raze cities, spreading war and death across the Middle East.
