And about Uncle Jon...

I meant to post something about this a while back, but I think I forgot (and I can't get to my archives at tblog to find out.

The Poor Man has some more information:
This report details ties between high-level executives at Riggs Bank and U.S. government officials, including President George W. Bush. These connections, many of which have not been previously reported, raise serious questions about the integrity of the ongoing federal investigation of Riggs Bank.

Riggs Bank was fined $25 million in May for violating federal anti-money laundering measures, and is currently being investigated by the Justice Department. Due to the allegation that money from a Saudi account at Riggs was funneled to several participants in the 9/11 terrorist plot, the investigation has critical national security implications.

It has been widely reported that the federal bank examiner responsible for many of the regulatory oversights at Riggs, R. Ashley Lee, was hired by the bank shortly after resigning from the OCC. Press reports have also noted that George W. Bush's uncle, Jonathan Bush, heads a subsidiary of the bank. However, other significant ties between the Bush administration, federal banking regulators, and Riggs officials have never been publicly disclosed.
There's a lot of information in this post on a subject that isn't getting a lot of play.

And here's a little quip from Slate quoting another source about the CIA's use of Riggs Bank:
The relationship with the CIA could prove problematic because it could cast a different light on the bank's dealings with two U.S. foreign-policy allies, former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi ambassador to Washington.

Given the intelligence connections to Riggs, prosecutors could be faced with proving that the bank's failure to disclose financial activity by the foreign officials wasn't implicitly authorized by parts of the U.S. government.
Like the Bush part maybe?
