The Times of London is reporting that President Obama will convene arms reduction talks with Russia, with the goal being to sign the most sweeping arms reduction treaty in a generation and reduce the stockpiles in both the United States and Russia by 1000 warheads each. That would be just short of 25%, and a damned good start. (We currently have over 4000 warheads in our arsenal - down from a peak of over 32,000.) UPDATE before publishing: I emailed my friend Richard Rhodes and asked him if the report was true, and got the following response: Tammy: It's true. Count on it. We're going to minimum deterrence, followed by a diplomatic initiative to move toward zero. Check out the names George Shultz, Sam Nunn, Henry Kissinger and Bill Perry. Obama endorsed their plan, which I'm proud to say I'm a member of. Best, Dick
