Edwards made a strong run for the presidency knowing full well that he was carrying on an affair, at least in the early stages of the campaign, which could come to light in the midst of the general election and fatally damage all Democrats' hopes for regaining the presidency. Just think how fun this weekend would be if John Edwards had won the nomination. Indeed, it seems clear that the aftermath of the affair was such that the chances of its coming to light were substantial. It's a level of recklessness and selfishness that I probably shouldn't but still do find shocking.
That anyone could be shocked by anything coming from an American politician these days is to underline America's refusal to live in reality.
Reckless and selfish are two of the more favorable adjectives we might attach to John Edwards. How about incredibly, incredibly STUPID? I know a lot of otherwise reasonable people wanted to see Edwards become the Democrat’s nominee. I myself never liked him in the least. Selfishness and arrogance seemed two obvious qualities early on. Insincerity radiated from his public face. And what do you call a man who uses the death of a child and the illness of a wife to promote himself on the political scene? He always seemed shallow and self-serving to me. I can’t be surprised at his selfishness, but his stupidity is mind-blowing. No, this is beyond stupidity.

One of the things I'd been wondering was whether John Edwards' slim victory over Hillary for second-place in Iowa would shift the media dynamic of the race and get people to cover it as more of a three-way contest. In general terms, it's already obvious that the answer is No.

Its John's acid test. I hope he passes it. He has to speak directly to the most involved, he has to remind them of their duty to obey only lawful orders, and remind officers that their oath is to the Constitution, not any passing man, and that they need not wait until January 20th, 2009, for a movement order. Each and every one is free to chose to serve their country in the stockade or the brig, or to continue to serve George Bush and his delusions.
Amen. And that is how you support our troops.

Tucker Carlson said this evening on MSNBC, talking about the alleged tension between Hillary and Barack Obama, that you just can't attack a woman, no matter what, because it looks like bullying. Since when did anyone ever hold back from attacking Hillary, including Tucker Carlson? But anyway, by that measure, I'm going to look like a bully, and particularly because of Elizabeth Edwards' cancer, but I think that's just a downright whiny and stupid thing to say. I hate to break it to her, but John Edwards is his own problem. (The $400 haircut was stupid, if nothing else. Did he really think that nobody would find that extravagant?) And I didn't think she carried off that phone call to Ann the Man Coulter in a very dignified way, either. She should have just made her point and shut up. Instead, she kept whinging on and on, which made her seem almost Coulterish herself. Nope, I don't think the Edwardses are my idea of Presidential material.
Of course, they beat the current residents all to pieces.

A microphone caught John Edwards and Hillary Clinton after the NAACP forum in Detroit yesterday proposing to exclude lesser-known candidates from the debates with Clinton saying, "We've got to cut the number ... They're not serious."
Indeed, that is the way its done. Nothing new here. Except that Dennis Kucinich put it all up on his website, including video links and this bit:
