The priest is sentenced

Cambridge, Mass. -- Defrocked priest Paul Shanley was sentenced yesterday to 12 to 15 years in prison yesterday for raping a boy in the 1980s, one of the highest-profile cases to stem from the U.S. Roman Catholic clergy abuse scandal.

During a sentencing hearing, his accuser, now a 27-year-old firefighter, described the convicted former priest as a "monster" and "the lowest of the low." There was scattered applause when Mr. Shanley, 74, was escorted from the packed courtroom in leg irons.

Defence lawyer Frank Mondano said he was worried that his client could die in prison, "given his age and frailty." He also expressed concern about his client's safety behind bars, especially since John Geoghan, another defrocked priest, was slain by a fellow inmate in 2003.

As an old inmate friend of mine used to say, "Paybacks are a motherfucker."

Besides, I have a very hard time feeling sorry for people like this. If you didn't listen to the interview regarding this case when I posted the link, and you are inclined to feel sorry for this old spawn of Satan, go check it out now. Sorry to say, I am coming up very short of sympathy these days. And there is an entire network of these fucks still out there and still being protected by the Catholic Church and by people very high up in our government.
