For the Love of Pete

U.S. military authorities are unable to find hundreds of nuclear missile components, The Financial Times reported in its online edition Thursday, but the Pentagon shrugged it off as simple record-keeping woes.

Jiminy Crickets!

All the little crap bits of information the administration likes to keep secret for reasons of national security? Well, apparently, the grounding of all jets at Langley doesn't qualify.

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Langley Air Force Base will ground its jets next week.

The Air Force says the service's Air Combat Command has ordered all jet fighters and bombers to remain grounded so airmen can review safety procedures and protocol.

Langley is home to three fighter squadrons, which fly the F-15 Eagle and F-22A Raptor.

  MSNBC

Yes, we're aware of the Langley jets. They're the ones that, for some strange reason, weren't scrambled when the 9/11 planes were in the skies. I guess they'll be doing an anniversary thing, won't they?

This grounding is in reaction to the jet that flew from North Dakota to Louisiana loaded with nuclear warheads. Sure, that makes sense. WTF?

And speaking of nukes

Meanwhile, the chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced that the Commission will approve Westinghouse’s sale of two nuclear reactors to China.

Conservatives and Republicans think this is a good idea. Vice President Cheney has lobbied in behalf of the sale. It is good for private business. It means $2.4 billion in revenues for Westinghouse Electric Company.

  VDare article

WTF?

These people (Cheneyites) just don't care. Their first and last concern is whether money is coming into their pockets.
Iran will never again be a world power, even if it has a few nukes. Persia was a power in ancient times, not today. If we don’t bother Iran, Iran won’t bother us.

China is a different matter.

China already is a world power. China holds enough US government debt to have the dollar and US interest rates in its hand. Last month in an official briefing a top Chinese general, Zhu Chenghu, said that if the US messes around with China or tries to interfere with China’s reunification with Taiwan, China will nuke the US: "If the Americans are determined to interfere, then we will be determined to respond. We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all the cities east of Xian. Of course, the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

VP Cheney and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission want to make sure China has what it takes to do the job.

[...]

The conservative movement has disappeared. The Republican Party has disappeared. The two have morphed into a brownshirt movement that worships coercion and a strutting little marionette who believes he can threaten peoples into submission.

Why does Cheney want to sell nuclear reactors to China, but order the US Strategic Command to prepare to nuke Iran’s nuclear power capability, a capability that would allow Iran to sell more oil to an energy-starved world?

What’s going on here?

Yeah, what?

That strutting little marionette may actually believe he is God's agent to call down Armageddon.

And by the way, this article was written by Ronald Reagan's Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, a former Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal and a former Contributing Editor of National Review.

And, oh yeah...

In conjunction with posting about the nuke training exercises off Charleston this month, I should have reposted this:
In Washington it is hardly a secret that the same people in and around the administration who brought you Iraq are preparing to do the same for Iran. The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing—that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack—but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections.

Nukes for India

President George W. Bush signed an agreement Monday with the Prime Minister of India to help the nuclear armed country develop its civilian nuclear power capability. But a measure passed by members of the House of Representatives Tuesday disapproves that arrangement for India, which is not a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

  Environment News Service article

Oh, those pesky details.
President Bush told the Indian leader that he will seek agreement from Congress to adjust U.S. laws and policies to allow the export of nuclear technology to India.

[...]

[...] Representative Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said, “Selling nuclear materials to India is a dangerous proposition and bad nonproliferation policy."

“Why should the United States sell controlled nuclear goods to India? asked Markey. "We cannot play favorites, breaking the rules of the non-proliferation treaty, to favor one nation at the risk of undermining critical international treaties on nuclear weapons.”

“Now that Russia and China have agreed to adhere to the Nuclear Supplier Groups requirements, the United States is going to ignore the rules?" Markey asked. "What will Russia say when they want to supply more nuclear materials or technology to Iran? You can be sure that Pakistan will demand equal treatment. Will the Bush administration soon be announcing nuclear cooperation with them?"

Markey forgets....Buttie has told us before: He is commander in chief, and while some people may have to explain their decisions, he does not.
